Course Synopsis

The “Person-of-the-Therapist” (POTT) Model is based on the premise that within the therapeutic relationship is a personal process that occurs between therapist and client. The essence of the POTT training is the idea that therapists are capable of developing an expertise in how they proactively use themselves (signature themes, family-of-origin, personal/ clinical experiences) in the therapeutic process to enhance the effectiveness of their efforts.

In this POTT online module (3hrs), participants will be introducted to the central assumptions and basic components of the POTT Training Model, including identifying their signature theme(s), as well as the POTT process and training program. Furthermore, this online module will look at the “Therapist’s Inner Conversation” (TIC) in relation to the person-of-the-therapist.

Module Methodology

The online module is a self-directed learning, which may take between two to three hours to complete, within a sitting. The online module will involve online recorded lectures, Q & A activities, quizzes, personal reflection and journaling, where appropriate. Participant is given two month to complete this POTT online module, upon registration of it.

Participant who has completed the graded quizzes and obtained a passing score of 50% will be eligible for Certificate of Participation. The download link to the Certificate will be available under the Progress Tab in the course site.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of the online module, participants should be able to:
  • Examine the central assumptions and basic components of POTT training model.
  • Identify their signature theme(s), and appraise how their personal issues (signature themes) may affect their clinical work and interpersonal relationship.
  • Organize one’s understanding of the POTT in view of the experiential POTT training.

Dr. Charles Sim graduated from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London, with a Master of Science in Family Therapy in 2002. He did his clinical training at the Department of Child and Family Psychiatry, King's College Hospital, as well as the renowned Maudsley Psychiatric Hospital in London, England. He then went on to complete his doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Minnesota (USA), including specialized training at the Minuchin Family Centre (NYC), Gottman Institute (Seattle), and Medical Family Therapy at the Medical Centre, Rochester University (USA). He is the master trainer for the “Person-of-the-Therapist” (POTT) and the “Marital First Responder” (MFR) training workshops. He received his specialized training in POTT from Dr Harry Aponte at Philadelphia, USA.

Charles was the former Head of the Master of Counselling programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). He developed the Master of Counselling, specializing in Couple and Family Therapy and the Graduate Diploma in Systemic Therapy programmes. He is the visiting consultant and clinical supervisor at the Psychological Medicine Department, National University Hospital, Singapore.

Currently, Charles is an Associate Faculty Member at the Nathan School of Human Development (NSHD), SUSS. He also designed and developed an online “Essentials of Clinical Supervision” and “Supervision-of-Supervision” courses for UniLEARN-SUSS. He is presently supervising online a group of counsellors/ supervisors-in-training (SITs) at the Beijing Normal University Mental Health Service Centre. And an External Chair Professor of Psychology at Tianjin Normal University, China. Charles is a clinical member of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy (Singapore), and a fellow of the Asian Academy of Family Therapy (Hong Kong).
